dc.description.abstract We introduce the notion of maximal solutions of a class of moving boundary problems in the sense that we characterize what inhibits global existence of solutions. The technique is demonstrated on a model describing the growth of an avascular tumor. Further applications of the main result will be given elsewhere. © European Mathematical Society 2011. eng
