This thesis describes how planting designs and flower displays of the 19th und early 20th century developed in the urban green spaces of Prussian cities. It aims to fill a significant gap in the research available so far.
Central to this work is a demonstration of how the broad spectrum of plants and design forms were used during this period – a spectrum that ranges from subtropical plants to annuals, bulbs and perennials. By establishing a systematic typology, the thesis attempted to clarify how these individual elements were integrated into a given context of usage and application.
This typology can thus serve as a guide to the different types of floral planting designs and decorative flower beds during this period. It enables a scientific approach to evaluating new planting schemes and offers ways of considering alternative replanting concepts.
