In zahlreichen Bauteilen des Antriebsstrangs von Kraftfahrzeugen wird der Konstruktionswerkstoff Polyamid angewendet. Zur Gewährleistung eines langfristigen Einsatzes dieses Werkstoffs unter den verschiedenen Belastungsbedingen klassischer und zukünftiger Antriebskonzepte sind tiefgehende Kenntnisse über die im Betrieb ablaufenden Alterungsprozesse essentiell. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse ermöglichen eine belastungsgerechte Ausgestaltung von Prüfvorschriften zur beschleunigten Beständigkeitsprüfung. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Bestimmung der Alterungsprozesse von Polyamiden infolge des Kontakts mit Kühlerfrostschutzmitteln und Kurbelgehäuseentlüftungs- bzw. Abgasrückführungskondensaten unter simulierten Fahrzeugbedingungen. Die Auswirkungen der Betriebsmedien, der Protonenkonzentration, der enthaltenen Säuren, der Prüfgefäße, der Zeit und der Temperatur werden betrachtet. Die künstlich degradierten Polymere ermöglichen zudem die Optimierung der Analysemethoden zur effizienteren Ursachencharakterisierung von Schadensfällen.
Die ortsaufgelöste Analyse an mittels Mikrotom präparierten Polymerschichten ermöglicht erstmals die Korrelation des Absorptions- und Degradationsgradienten durch die Ionenchromatographie (IC), Gelpermeationschromatographie (GPC) und dynamische Differenzkalorimetrie (DSC). Die Tiefenanalyse des Polyamids 66 mit 35 % Glasfasern zeigt ein exponentielles Diffusionsprofil nach der zweiten Fickschen Gleichung hier Schwefelsäure (IC) mit einem exponentiellen Degradationsverlauf über die Probentiefe (DSC, GPC). Die Analyse der Absorption (IC) und Degradation (GPC) an der Polymeroberfläche definiert eine von der jeweiligen Konzentration an Carbonsäureamid und Säure bzw. Proton abhängige Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit der säurekatalysierten Degradation. In Abhängigkeit der Art der Säure wird die säurekatalysierte Degradation in der kristallinen und amorphen Phase des Polymers in anorganischen Säuren und ein Gefügestruktur differenzierter Abbau (nur amorphe Phase) in organischen Säuren bei 100 °C bestimmt (DSC). Die hauptsächliche Degradation in der amorphen Phase führt teilweise zur Rekristallisation der gebildeten verkürzten Ketten. Die Absorption und Degradation des Polymers ist abhängig von der übereinstimmenden Kohäsionsenergie der Säure zum Polymer. Essigsäure führt bei vergleichbarer Protonenkonzentration wie Ameisensäure und niedrigerer Protonenkonzentration wie Salzsäure infolge Van der Waals-Interaktionen zur höchsten Löslichkeit und stärksten Reduzierungen des Verschlaufungsnetzwerks über den Probenquerschnitt (Zugversuch). Wasserstoffperoxid und Salpetersäure verdeutlichen eine Veränderung des Sorptions- und Degradationsmechanismus infolge oxidativer Degradation. Der Kontakt mit Salpetersäure führt zu einer beschleunigten Degradation der Polymeroberfläche (GPC, DSC) mit reduzierter Tiefendegradation (Zugversuch) im Vergleich zu Schwefelsäure.
Im Autoklav wurde die fahrzeugnahe Beständigkeitsuntersuchung der Polyamide in Kühlerfrostschutzmedien und Abgasrückführungs- bzw. Kurbelgehäuseentlüftungskondensaten untersucht. Die Kondensate und das Kühlerfrostschutzmittel degradieren das Polyamid 66 mit 35 % Glasfasern vornehmlich in der amorphen Phase unter Bildung neuer kristalliner Anteile (DSC). In den Kondensaten stellen die Säuren, Acetaldehyd und alkoholische Kraftstoffanteile die für Polyamid 66 mit 35 % Glasfasern degradierenden Komponenten dar. Eine reduzierte Beständigkeit der Polyamide infolge Kohäsion (Absorption) und Bildung von Carbonsäuren sollte bei Anwendung von biogenen Zusätzen berücksichtigt werden. In Kühlmedien führt die über die Betriebsdauer auftretende oxidative Degradation des Ethylenglykols in eine säurekatalysierte Degradation des Kunststoffes. Die Definition eines künstlich degradierten Kühlerfrostschutzmittels mit Zugabe der im Fahrzeug entstehenden Säuren ermöglicht erstmals eine optimierte und beschleunigte fahrzeugnahe Beständigkeitsuntersuchung von Kunststoffen.
The engineering material polyamide is used in many components of the powertrain in vehicles. Detailed knowledge of the aging processes occurring during engine life is essential to ensure the long-term use of this material under the various load conditions of conventional and future powertrain concepts. The results of this work will provide necessary information for the design of accelerated durability tests. The aim of this work is to determine the aging processes of polyamides as a result of exposure to engine coolant fluids and blow-by- and exhaust gas recirculation condensates under simulated vehicle conditions. The effects of the operating media, the proton concentration, the corresponding acid anions, the time, the test vessels and the temperature are studied. The artificially degraded polymers also allow an optimization of analytical methods for more efficient characterization of the causes of damage.
For the first time, spatially resolved analysis on polymer layers prepared by microtome allows correlation of the absorption and degradation gradient obtained by ion chromatography (IC), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The depth analysis of the polyamide 66 with 35 % glass fibers shows an exponential diffusion profile according to the second Fick's equation of sulfuric acid (IC) with an exponential degradation curve over the sample depth (DSC, GPC). The analysis of absorption (IC) and degradation (GPC) at the polymer surface points to a reaction rate of acid-catalyzed degradation dependent on the respective concentration of carboxamide and acid or proton. Depending on the intercations of the acid, acid-catalyzed degradation is taking part at 100 °C in the crystalline and amorphous phases of the inorganic acids and only in the amorphous phase of the organic acids (DSC). The main degradation in the amorphous phase causes partial recrystallization of the shortened chains. At high temperatures, the absorption and degradation of the acids depends on the matched cohesive energy to the polymer, which is independent of the molecular volume. Acetic acid leads to the highest solubility and strongest reductions of the entanglement network over the sample cross-section (tensile test) at comparable proton concentrations as formic acid and lower proton concentrations as hydrochloric acid due to London dispersion forces. Hydrogen peroxide and nitric acid imposed a change to the sorption and degradation mechanism due to oxidative degradation. The nitric acid leads into an accelerated degradation of the polymer surface (GPC, DSC) with reduced depth degradation (tensile test) compared to sulfuric acid.
The autoclave enables vehicle-related durability testing of the polyamides in engine coolant and blow-by- and exhaust gas recirculation condensates. The condensates and the engine coolant degrade the polyamide 66 with 35 % glass fibers mainly in the amorphous phase with formation of new crystalline fractions (DSC). In the exhaust condensates, the degrading components for polyamide 66 with 35% glass fibers can be identified as acids, acetaldehyde and alcoholic fuel components. A reduced resistance of polyamides due to cohesion (absorption) and formation of carboxylic acids should be taken into consideration when using biogenic fuels. Oxidative degradation of ethylene glycol leads to acid-catalyzed degradation of the polymer in cooling agents (pH, IC, tensile test). The oxidative degradation of the cooling agent leads to absorption of the anions and, in particular of the protons formed into the polymer. The absorption of the formed protons from the oxidative degradation of the ethylene glycol leads into an acid-catalysed degradation of the polyamide 66 with 35 % glass fiber in cooling media. For the first time, the definition of an artificially degraded engine coolant with the addition of the acids generated in the vehicle enables an optimized accelerated field relevant durability test of polymers.
