Seals are among the most important and most frequently used machine elements in technical systems. They are essential for reliable and safe machine operation. But although sealing technology is a key technology with solutions for countless applications, there are still gaps in knowledge for a variety of options that modern sealing technology offers users to make products and systems operate more efficiently and reliably. Such a knowledge gap is the subject of this work. Specifically, the application of standard rotary shaft seals as rotating seals was investigated. On the one hand rotating radial shaft seals pose a challenge, as there is a risk of leakage when lifting off due to the centrifugal force. On the other hand, this effect can be used in order to relieve the sealing edge at high speeds and thus avoid thermal overload. Questions about application limits and test methods are linked to the pumping effect, an estimation of the critical speeds using friction and radial force measurements together with an analytical calculation method is introduced, and the potential for reducing the friction of rotating seals while maintaining sealing reliability is shown.
