The diversity of understandings of place as well as of design intentions and interpretations when locating in architecture and landscape architecture are the subject of this contribution by Margitta Buchert. The potentials of locating as a targeted way of architectural design are demonstrated and exemplified by contemporary architecture and open spaces, which are characterized by a creative analysis and further thinking of the ‚place‘, that go beyond the mere positioning of a building on a plot of land, by taking into account the surrounding nature, history, architecture, and people. The article pleads for being open to the given site, so that the architecture can create a unique living environment and a wealth of spatial experiences, enabling people to develop an environmental awareness and a sense of place.
