A treatment of conditional clauses from the point of view of such terms as real-unreal conditions or similar is unsatisfactory if the first requirement for the language is that of communication. This essay presents the problem of conditional clauses from the perspective of signification and of the propositions that are expressed by such constructions. Signification is founded on the relation between antecedent and consequence. The final meanings are given by the interaction between the relation on the one hand and context and intentionality of the speaker on the other. The author distinguishes among more general meanings such as wishes or influence, more concrete meanings such as formulations of laws and norms, and rhetorical uses and argumentation. Hypotheses are treated separately from the field of grammar and located in the field of rhetoric.
El tratamiento del periodo condicional bajo la optica de terminos como condicionales reales o irreales u otros similares es insuficiente cuando la primera exigencia que se plantea a la lengua es la de la comunicacion. Este trabajo presenta el problema del periodo condicional desde la perspectiva de la significacion y las proposiciones que expresan estas construcciones sintacticas. La significacion es fundamentada en la relacion que se establece entre el antecedente y la consecuencia. Anadiendo la intencionalidad del hablante y el contexto se llega a significados que van desde lo mas generales como deseos o influencia, a los mas concretos como la formulacion de leyes y normas o a los mas retoricos como los usos argumentativos. La hipotesis se saca del plano de la gramatica y se localiza en el de la retorica.
