Auseinandersetzung weitreichend thematisiert.
Up until now, social cohesion has been a subject of intense discussion in a mostly
political context. Furthermore, social cohesion, in general, finds considerable
resonance in academic reading and has already been discussed and structured by
many authors. A discussion of the topic of social cohesion has not yet found its way
into regional planning. However, the planning and implementation of projects in a
region provoke an intense emotional response from inhabitants, thus directly
impacting the social dynamics of the area. A regional project inevitable results in the
longlasting change of social cohesion through the inhabitants' engagement or
resistance. This change in social cohesion will be further explored in this master's
thesis. The district of Rotenburg (Wümme) with the planned project SuedLink as a
case study was chosen as the area to be examined. Since the planning stage,
SuedLink has been met with lively resistance from the inhabitants of the region and
has been the subject of ongoing negotiations in the local daily newspapers. These
daily newspapers served as a data basis for the evaluation of this master thesis. The
evaluation was carried out in the form of a qualitative content analysis of the
newspaper articles. It should provide conclusions about the changes in social
cohesion caused by a major construction project. As an interim result, the information
from the pieces in the local daily newspapers was combined and condensed with the
results of the literature research on social cohesion. The research resulted in new
thematic complexes and variations that show the precise effects of SuedLink on the
structure of social cohesion in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme). It became
apparent that positive effects developed alongside the problems. The results were
then further condensed and analyzed. The evaluated results served as a basis for the
development of tips for local planners, who in particular can make benefit of the
positive side effects of the change in social cohesion.
